Members of Jasper N. Keller Chapter #33, Mountain Valley Empire Chapter #97, Alexander Graham Bell Chapter #15 and the Region were in Tampa, Fl. attending the Annual Training Meeting.  We had decided to arrive a day early and put our time to good use to paint a map of the United States at the Cross Bayou Elementary School in Pinellas Park, Florida for the students to use in conjunction with their studies.  The School has an enrollment of 528 students and serve grades K-5 as well as for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Varying Exceptionalities, Speech Impaired, Language Impaired, Visually Impaired, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and the Gifted.

We were able to first attend a school assembly where Principal Marcia Stone introduced each of us and told the students the purpose of our visit.  The enthusiasm was heart warming.  We were presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and tokens of appreciation for each of us.  After the assembly, we got down to business and started laying out the map and laying out assignments for the colors and order of doing the states.  The children, came & went all day, were very curious about the map and very supportive of our endeavors.  Words of encouragement and amazement could be heard as they passed.  Cindy Hebbler, our school contact who by the way is deaf herself, was a life long friend of Gabe Olah from Mountain Valley Empire Chapter.  She jumped right in too and painted Florida.  She, along with the other teachers, were completely amazed and thrilled about the finished product.  The Principal and other teachers couldn’t wait to show other schools in the area, the project we had done for them.  One of our volunteers, June Weakley, was interviewed by a girl on the school newspaper.

Since it was an early release day for the kids, we were able to participate in the teacher’s Thanksgiving Luncheon…..what a great variety of casseroles, meats, etc and let us not forget the great desserts!

We all left with full hearts and full tummies!  What a great day!
