EASY ACCESS
The Easy Access program, offered in conjunction with the
National Park Service and
the National Center on Accessibility
(NCA), strives to bring the beauty of America’s
great outdoors within easy reach of all visitors, particularly people with
disabilities and
seniors. Across the United States, Pioneers adopted the program in 1991 and since
have volunteered over 100,000 hours and helped complete over 150 accessibility
projects in 75 national parks.
Northwood State Park, in Northwood New Hampshire, has been an EASY
ACCESS project of the Jasper N. Keller Pioneers for many years now. Most
recently in September 2002,
twenty five or so Pioneers, their families and friends gathered for an entire
day
of cleaning out culverts, rebuilding worn down trails, planted flowers, cut down trees and
heavy brush
overhanging
the main road into the park, and cleared brush by the ponds to
make the area more accessible to the physically challenged, especially those in
wheelchairs.
